THE ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT OF

THE

REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR

RICHARD
DIRECTOR

J.

BOYLE

In 1973 the Academy moved toward
what will surely be considered an important milestone in its long history.
Based upon the recommendation of a
group of Consultants (see Annual Report for 1972) the Academy's Board of
Directors voted to restore and renovate
the Academy's historic building at
Broad and Cherry Streets as our primary contribution to the Bicentennial
in 1976.
The Pennsylvania Academy of the
Fine Arts, founded in 1805, is the country's oldest public collection and the
oldest continuing vital art school. Its
present building was designed by the
noted Philadelphia architect, Frank
Furness in 1876 and has been hailed as
an architectural masterpiece. Therefore
the Academy not only houses works
of art and the processes by which they
are made, but is in itself-a work of art.
Thus it is these three elements: collection, school and building that constitute the entity known ,as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and
which make it unique. In addition to
the up-coming Bicentennial celebrations, the building itself will be 100:"'years
old on April 22,1976, and it is on that
date we hope to open the newly restored and refurbished Broad and
Cherry building; it is on that date that
a great American collection will be
shown in its new and appropriate
setting.
The Academy will not only engage in
what our architects call an "accurate
but reasonable restoration" but preservation as well. The project also calls
for air-conditioning, climate control and
wholly new lighting for museum and
school alike.
To this end a major fund-raising drive
has been launched and the architectural firm of Day and Zimmerman has
been hired. Mr. Hyman Myers, an
architectural historian and Furness
scholar, is the architect in charge of the

project. The firm of Ketchum, Inc. was
retained to organize and kick-off the
drive to obtain the necessary funds to
proceed with the project.
In order to expedite the work and
lower costs, it was decided that the collection, school and staff must vacate
the building and find temporary quarters for the two years it would take to
do the job.
My first concern, then, when I came
to the Academy on September 4th as
the new Director, was to find a suitable
location for the school, the museum and
for the collection. Eventually, after
the consideration of many locations,
the Academy staff with Board approval
decided upon the following: space for
the school was secured at 2200 Arch
Street; the staff will be moved into
Peale House where an exhibition program will be sustained; the bulk of the
collection will be housed at the Quaker
Storage Company and as much of the
collection as is possible will be lent to
other art institutions. Plans were made
to move the collection, an arduous task
ably performed by Elizabeth Bailey, our
Registrar in charge of the move.
In the meantime, a series of important exhibitions and related programs
planned by my predecessor, Thomas N.
Armstrong III (who resigned August 31)
and the Academy's Curator, Frank H.
Goodyear, Jr., enlivened the 1973-74
season (see Exhibition listing on Page 4).
The Academy concerts, held four
times a year, continue to attract patrons ·
interested in the relationship of music
and the visual arts, and is part of a
tradition at the Academy dating back
at least to the 1870's. Like the exhibitions at Peale House the Academy concerts provide exposure for young
artists to the community.
1973 was also a year of significant
changes in the Academy, not the least
of which is the new format of this

Annual Report. In an attempt to give
Academy publications a new image we
have had a logo devised by the designer, James Ellis, who has also advised us on a standard but flexible
approach to all our publications. As
this has taken a great deal of thought
and time it accounts, in part, for the
delay of this year's Annual Report.
However, we feel that the result is
worth the effort.
Staff changes have been no less
significant. Judith Gennaro was hired
as Bookkeeper, replacing Diana Satterfield; Kathy Zickler became our new
Manager of the Academy Museum
Shop; replacing Carla Marvin; Susan
Leidy was hired as Assistant to the
Registrars, and Ann Rodgers was also
brought into that Department to help
with the move. Mrs. Elizabeth Kolowrat was hired as part-time staff
Tour-Coordinator for our Volunteer
Guides, with the possibilities of forming a fledgling Education Department.
Louise Schutz, in addition to being
Secretary to the Director, has been
made Assistant in Public Relations, a
department that has been through the
most profound change of any. In January the Academy created the first
full-time position of Development and
Public ·Relations in its long history. Jay
Maclaughlin was hired to fill this post,
replacing Tom Werner and Charles
Shelleneerger who were part-time
employees. Mr. Maclaughlin has taken
over for the Ketchum, Inc. staff in our
restoration fund-drive and he will
continue to work closely with the
Director and Robert Stubbs, our Business Manager, on plans to build a solid
financial base for the Academy. Such
plans include seeking annual sustaining gifts and increased foundation
support; increased memberships and
the formation of a stronger Alumni
Association. Popular fund-raising
events will also be planned. A good

example of this was the gala costume
party held in November organized by
the Women's Committee, in which the
gllests had to appear as one of the
paintings in the Academy collection.

The 1973-74 season has been active,
vital and lively. However, it has been
marred by two deaths which have saddened the Academyfamily. Harry Rosin,
noted sculptor and Academy Instructor
in Sculpture, died in September. Mr.
Rosin had been associated with the
Academy as student, exhibitor or instructor for the past 68 years. He will
be sorely missed by the Academy staff
and students alike. And in March, 1974
American architecture received a great
blow with the death of Louis I. Kahn.
Mr. Kahn will be missed not only by the
world of architecture and by his many
friends and admirers, but by all of us at
the Academy as well. Louis Kahn was
a member of our Board of Directors and
a good friend. He loved the collection,
the school and above all, the Furness
building. In a letter of April 20 to John
Gribbel 2nd, President of the Board,
Mr. Kahn wrote enthusiastically in
support of the restoration and of his
feeling for the building. I feel it is
appropriate and fitting to end my report
with the words of this great American
architect:
This is a wonderful opportunity
to give renewed life to this lifegiving and inspired building, true
to a work of art which is the giver
of a life. When the first strains of
the familiar Fifth parts the air, it
appears as an old friend, only you
did not notice before that his eyes
are blue. So lasting and able to reinspire is a good work.
I hope that this exchange of (new
lamps for old' retains the genie. It
is in the Gallery, it is in the School.

REPORT OF THE CURATOR
In a nation that has become increasingly aware of its own artistic heritage,
the Pennsylvania Academy's role in
presenting that heritage, and at the
same time defining its own place
within that history, is more clearly
defined than ever. Reassessment of
hitherto unknown aspects of American
painting through catalogued exhibitions was the keynote for 1973. New
ground was broken in the initial evaluations of important American artists
such as Thomas Doughty, Susan Macdowell Eakins and Thomas Anshutz,
and the institutional functions of the
Pennsylvania Academicians, a group
of artists organized around the Pennsylvania Academy in the 19th century,
was investigated for the first time. The
exhibition Held in Trust paid tribute to
the 166 year history of generous donations of art works to the Academy's
magnificent collection. Such published ,
research valuably expands the scholarly
pool of information on American painting. The schedule of exhibitions at
Broad and Cherry Streets for 1973 is
listed below:

I would also like to thank the diligent
and imaginative work of Mrs. T. l.
Emory Eysmans, and Mrs. Elizabeth
Kolowrat, and the docents of the Academy for helping in the interpretation of
exhibitions to the public. These tours
have been well received. The Academy
is seriously committed to its vital role
as an educative institution in Philadelphia, and is deeply appreciative of
the enthusiastic work of its docents.
Consistent with this commitment to
present and evaluate the best work of
the American creative genius, the program of exhibiting unrecognized, contemporary talent at its Peale Galleries
on Chestnut Street creat~d another
year of excitement. The Peale Galleries
have now become an important addition in Philadelphia's preseritation of
contemporary art. The schedule of
exhibitions for 1973 is listed below:
December 21, 1972-January 28, 1973
Elijah ' Pierce
Justin McCarthy

.

February 8-March 18,1973
Robin Fredenthal (architectural sculpture)

March 29-May 6,1973

September 20-0ctober 28, 1973

Bruce Katsiff (photographs)

November 8-December 16,1973
John Moore (recent paintings and watercolors)

Notably, the Pennsylvania Academy
was the first museum to present . the
model constructions of the young Philadelphia sculptor Robin Fredenthal who
has been recently recognized by important public commissions in Philadelphia.
It is encouraging to see both public and
private support of talented Philadelphia
artists and sculptors. These exhibitions
would not have been possible without
the helpful cooperation of the artists
themselves, and in many cases, of their
dealers.
1973 Was highlighted by a range ·of
gifts to the Pennsylvania Academy's
museum. These have come at a time
when the American painting market is
daily establishing new auction price
records, and when most museums, and
certainly the Academy, cannot afford
the competition. I wish to thank those
donors of works of art, and donors of
purchase funds for works of. art, for
their generosity. In addition to those
gifts already published in the New
Acquisitions bulletin mailed to the
membership earlier last year, I would
especially like to acknowledge the gift
of Clement B. Newboldof portraits of
Clement B. Newbold and Mrs. Clement
B. Newbold by Cecilia Beaux, and an
important interior composition with
figures, entitled The Breakfast Room,
by Edmund C. Tarbell.

If reassessment and a commitment
to contemporary talent were the key
elements in the raison d'etre of the
Academy's exhibition program for 1973,
consolidation, or strengthening, of its
. permanent collection was the other
major activity in 1973. Under the able
direction of Joseph Amarotico, conservator, the Academy spent $11,497
in conserving fifty:-seven works from
its own collection, and in addition
conserved several works owned pri-:
vately that were used for exhibitions
at the Academy. This crucially important work would not have been possible ·
without the generosity and continued
interest of Mr. and Mrs. Bertram l.
O'Neill, and the late Mrs. T. Carrick
Jordan. The big conservation b~ttle is
behind us, but conservation will remain
an ongoing and vital element to insure
the safety of the collection.
Reassessment and Consolidation.
With the continued interest and support
of its public, these activities can continue to contribute to our understanding
of the American arts. Much has preceded us, giant steps are about to be
taken. The Academy is primed for
success.

REPOR1' OF THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE SCHOOL

. HENRY HOTZ, JR.
ADMINISTRATOR OF THE SCHOOL

6

The Academy schools continue to
attract the art students whose major
interest is in the pure studio practice of
painting, sculpture and graphics. Fortyfour: percent of the students entering
in 1973 came to the Academy upon
graduation from high school. Fifty-six
percent have college or art school experience before their enrollment.
Students from thirteen foreign countries and twenty-two states and the
District of Columbia are represented .
The enrollment of 397 day students in
the spring of 1973 and 407 in the fall of
1973 is the largest recorded in recent
years. The evening and summer schools
are also filled to capacity.
Tuition rates were increased from
$990 to $1100 per year beginning with
the fall of 1973. In spite of this increase
the Academy's tuition is below 90% of
the colleges and universities in the
Delaware Valley. This does not include
the State supported Universities' resident tuition.
Our association with the Philadelphia
College of Art whereby Academy
students may earn their BFA degree is
entering its third year. Fifty-'one students were enrolled in the program of
whom 29 are presently enrolled in the
Academy. The other 22 have completed
their studio requirements and are
attending P.C.A. only.
During the year several changes have
occurred on our faculty. In September
the Academy, its students, faculty and
staff suffered the loss of one of our
beloved senior artists, Harry Rosin. Mr.
Rosin died September 28, 1973. A student of the Academy from 1921 to 1928,
he had spent many years abroad and
in the South Seas before returning to
the Academy to teach in 1939. He was
recognized as one of America's foremost sculptors.

Mr. Philip Pavia resigned his teaching post due to the demands of several
commissions. James Gadson resigned
to accept a full-time teaching post at
the University of North Carolina. In
their stead Mr. David Slivka has joined
the faculty in the sculptor's studios;
Lizabeth Marder is teaching lithography and drawing in the first year
studios;. Mr. Bruce Samuelson and Mr.
William Martone joined our evening
school faculty. Mr. Robert F. McGovern
substituted for Mr. Robert Hale, lecturing on Anatomy. Mr. Hale was unable to lecture during the first semester
of the 1973-74 school year due to illness.
The full studio schedules are ampli.;.
fied each year with special lectures,
films, museum visits and visiting art ists. During 1973 our special features
included the film series Pioneers of
Modern Art; six films presenting important 20th Century artists; lectures
by art historians Dennis Cate and Dr.
Ronald Dalzell; visiting artists Philip
Perlstein, Mike Nevelson, C. W . Hoehn,
Masuo Ikeda and Angelo Savelli; a bus
trip to Washington and two to New
York; seven exhibitions . of student
work in the student galleries at the
Peale House. Artists Raphael Sabatini
and Richard Lippold judged the Stewardson and Stimson sculpture competitions respectively.
The exercises for the award of the
scholarships and prizes held in May,
1973 were unique in many ways. Guest
speaker Louise Nevelson was presented
via video tape. Due to circumstances
beyond our control Mrs. Nevelson could
not attend the exercises and instead
invited a group of students to meet
with her in her New York studio. This
meeting was taped and presented at
our exercises in the Academy galleries
on Wednesday May 2, 1973. The largest

number of competitors on record (92)
for European and other travelling
scholarships presented their work in
the galleries. Thirteen were awarded
scholarships. Forty-eight students received the Academy's four year Certificate. A record attendance at the exercises of 656 visitors witnessed the
award of more than $35,000 in prizes
and scholarships. The exhibition of
student work continued through Sunday, May 27, 1973. 6372 visitors saw
the exhibition and 82 student works
were purchased for $8,915 . .
During the fall of 1973 the Academy
staff was involved in searching for
suitable temporary quarters for the
school and museum during the renovation and restoration of the Academy
building. With the approval of the
Board of Directors the ground floor of
the former Daily News Building at
2200 Arch Street will be rented to house
the school from May 1, 1974 to May,
1976. This space will provide com-:
parable studio and auxiliary areas to
those in the Academy building. Day
and Zimmermann have been engaged
to design and supervise the renovation
of the temporary quarters.

REPORT OF THE CONSERVATOR

JOSEPH AMAROTICO
CONSERVATOR

8

In 1973, 57 paintings from the Academy's collections received major conservation treatment at a cost of $11,497.
Weak canvases were reinforced by
lining them with new linen and loose,
brittle paint films were consolidated
through wax adhesive impregnation on
the Koch vacuum-hot table. Extraneous
substances on' the pictures' surfaces
such as dirt, darkened varnish films
and discolored restorers paint were
removed and paint , losses were compensated for by in-painting.
$4,935 went toward relatively minor
treatment and toward miscellaneous
services such as condition reports for
major exhibitions and for touching up
losses on frames.
Consultation and services were also
available to other, nearby institutions
and 39 paintings from these sources
recieved major treatment in 1973.
There are quite obvious signs of a
large increase in the number of paintings that will be treated in the coming
2 years, both for the Academy and for
small museums and other institutions
in the area. We look forward to doing
this work in the Academy's temporary
conservation studio at the Quaker
Storage Warehouse, 9th and Poplar
Streets, Philadelphia.
For many reasons, the Academy is
quite fortunate in its happy combination of museum and school. Little of
the past and projected work could be
accomplished without the efforts of
current and former students from the
Academy school who are assistants
in the conservation studio. Only with
the help of Robert Ayers, Dorinda
Fryce, James , Mahoney:, Peter Groesbeck, Glenn Miller, Johanna Pillischer
and Anthony Ciambella can we hope
to undertake the work necessary to
conserve our collections.

All of the work of preservation in the
conservation studio would be undone,
very swiftly, by a hostile environment.
Fortunately, steps have been taken, by
the Academy, for conservation in a
deeper, precautionary sense. Many of
our paintings are being routinely pro"':
tected with a fomecor backing and all
of them will be thus protected in the
near future. A better means of securi~g
paintings in their frames has been
implemented. Thanks to the vigilance
of the Registrars and diligence of the
maintenance staff, improved handling
of the collection is evident.
The installation of an optimum
museum environment which will be
accomplished in 1976, particularly
climate control and new storage facilities, will enduringly benefit the rather
ephemeral materials from which pictures are made. This ideal ambience
will lessen the frequency of the necessity for repair and will prolong the work
that has so far been done in the conservation studio.

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE WOMEN'S COMMITTEE

14

During 1973 our Committee commandeered three Art Safaris and launched a Fine Arts Costume Ball which
we hope will develop into an annual
affair after the restoration.
Our office is now comfortably located at Peale House. Also ten ladies
became new active members: Mmes.
Philip H. Behr, Wm. Delafield, T. L.
Emory Eysmans, W. Tucker Gresh,
Henry Harris, Louis Hill, Nelson Leidner, Stuart F. Louchheim, Martin Saunders, and Harleston Wood. We now
have eight associate members; among
them, Mrs. J. H. Ward Hinkson, to our
delight, a former President of the Committee, Mrs. Watkins became Mrs. Richard Hearkness, of Washington, D.C.
and remains an active member.
The opening of the Hobson Pittman
exhibit in January was a beautiful affair,
ably handled by Mrs. Grossman, Mrs.
Eysmans, and Mrs. Thomas. These three
members were in charge of refreshments and arrangements for all openings through the year, at Broad and
Cherry, and Peale House.
Mrs. Kaufmann, Mrs. Peck and Mrs.
Harleston Wood, Co-Chairmen of Students' Activities, planned and attended
the Opening Day Lunch in September
in the students' lounge at Peale House
as well as arranging with Mr. Lulias,
whose help we couldn't do without,
refreshments for six monthly Students'
Openings, from hoagies to a beer
party. The Committee is most appreciative of Mrs. Sinkler's kind offer to
finance the beer party, which the students particularly relished. They look
forward very much to these parties;
many have expressed gratitude to
members of our Commitee. At the
same time we enjoy having the chance
to see their work.
The three Art Safaris were extremely
popular. In fact quite a few applicants
had to be turned down because quotas

were filled with alacrity. The Washington, D.C. day was managed by
Mmes. Reath, Saunders, Harris, Gribbel, Leidner, and Townsend. It was
planned around the Impressionist Collection sent on loan from Russia to the
Nat'1. Gallery. A special slide-lecture
had been arranged for the PAFA group.
The Renwick, Dumbarton Oaks, and
rooms at the State Dept. were included
with lunch at Kennedy Center.
Mrs. Holleran ran the Princeton Safari during which it poured rain all day,
yet the art lovers were enthusiastic and
undaunted! They visited the Norton
Simon Collection at the Museum at
Princeton Univ., lunched at Chez Odette, followed by the Duke Gardens in
Somerville, N.J., which were beautiful,
and luckily, under glass!
The Texas Safari in October, 5 days,
was also a winner! Our Committee is
most grateful to Mrs. Greenfield and
Mrs. Reath, Mrs. Greenfield for her
outstanding ability, flair, verve and
"know- how" in putting together the
exciting, all-inclusive itinerary, and
Mrs. Reath for her efficient handling of
many details, her calm decisiveness,
and her composure in the face of
various complications which one
expects when conducting 80 people
through four major cities. Much credit
goes to Mrs. Friedman, our secretary,
for her many hours of work setting
everything up.
There were visits to nine museums
and 15 private collections in Houston,
San Antonio, Dallas and Ft. Worth. Our
large group, or should we call it a
crowd, were entranced, in fact quite
euphoric!
At Mrs. Greenfield's suggestion, Mr.
Louis Kahn was persuaded to be our
guest, so that we might present him
with a citation for his outstanding work
in architecture. He joined us at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Fort-

son at Ft. Worth. Mrs. Fortson is the
daughter of Mr. Kimbell who commissioned Mr. Kahn to design the Kimbell Museum in Ft. Worth. Mr. Kaufmann , a PAFA Board member, and Mrs.
Greenfield presented Mr. Kahn with
the citation after dinner, and he was
offered the keys to the city of Ft. Worth
by the mayor. All of us were so gratified
to have had the opportunity to honor
Mr. Kahn in this way, especially now,
since the very sad event of his death.
The Board of Directors played a large
part in the financial success of the Fine
Arts Ball by kindly contributing individually, thereby underwriting the expenses. Mrs. Charles Mather, III was
Chairman of the party, and with the
help of Mmes. West, Thomas, Stevenson and Harris, gave everybody a splendid time. Mr. Goodyear took charge of
hanging all portraits which members of
the committee had copied for their
costumes for the evening, so there was
a minimum of floral decor. Mrs.
Mather personally, with her helpers,
arranged baskets of fruit for each table.
A grand march took place and prizes
were given to Mrs. Thomas for the
prettiest costume, the Jim Dallett family
for the best group, Mr. John Gribbel
the best resemblance to the portrait,
Mr. Goodyear and Mr. Ted Newbold
tied for the most original. Our Committee are unanimously in favor of another
costume party of some kind after the
Academy building has been restored.
In closing we wish to extend a warm
welcome to Mr. Richard Boyle, Director. We know that his devotion to PAFA
plus his scholarship will guide us well
during the productive years to come.

Contributions made to PAFA during
the year:
$5,000.00 towards a teaching fellowship
5,000.00 towards a new acquisition
4,000.00 to Centennial Fund towards
new students lounge
2,500.00 to the school towards new
lithograph press
1,217.24 lunch for students on
opening day in Sept., plus
parties for six students '
openings, & wine.
328.50 Peale Club garden
240.00 for student help Cresson
Day
2,825.00 help for needy students'
tuition, supplies, etc.
