PRESIDENT’S LETTER
PAFA’s new tagline boldly declares, “We Make
Artists.” This is an intentionally provocative
statement. One might readily retort, “Aren’t
artists born to their calling?” Or, “Don’t artists
become artists through a combination of hard
work and innate talent?” Well, of course they
do. At the same time, PAFA is distinctive among
the many art schools across the United States in
that we focus on training fine artists, rather than
designers. Most art schools today focus on this
latter, more apparently utilitarian career training.
PAFA still believes passionately in the value of art for art’s sake, art for beauty,
art for political expression, art for the betterment of humanity, art as a defining voice in American and world civilization. The students we attract from
around the globe benefit from this passion, focus, and expertise, and our
Annual Student Exhibition celebrates and affirms their determination to be
artists.
PAFA is a Museum as well as a School of Fine Arts. So, you may ask, how does
the Museum participate in “making artists?” Through its thoughtful selection
of artists for exhibition and acquisition, PAFA’s Museum helps to interpret,
evaluate, and elevate artists for more attention and acclaim. Reputation is an
important part of an artist’s place in the ecosystem of the art world, and PAFA
helps to reinforce and build the careers of artists, emerging and established,
through its activities.
PAFA’s Museum and School also cultivate the creativity of young artists.
Countless public programs serve children in strollers, public and private
school children, and young people who attend summer camps and after school
programs. Whether they seek to be professional artists or simply enjoy
expressing themselves through visual art, PAFA fosters and refines their
talent and interest. As our mission statement succinctly states, “PAFA
promotes the transformative power of art and art making.”
The theme, therefore, of this Annual Report is, “Artists Make Us Who We Are.”
For all we accomplish in “making artists,” we are inspired by the artists who
train at PAFA, exhibit here, and place their work permanently in our collections. We are also grateful to our many supporters and community partners
for making this noble mission possible.

Acquisitions
In 2013, over 300 acquisitions were made to the
collection, including purchase of works by PAFA
faculty and alumni artists, Sidney Goodman, Njideka
Akunyili, Eileen Neff, and Scott Noel. PAFA received
generous gifts of art from Robert and Frances Kohler,
Jean Bodine, Nessa Forman (bequest), Linda Lee Alter,
Luther Brady, Connie and Jules Kay, Powell Bridges,
and others.
PAFA’s collection continued to grow thanks to the
dedication and generosity of patrons. Among the
highlights are large-scale, major self-portraits by Joan
Brown, given by the artist’s estate, and Gladys Nilsson
given by Robert and Frances Kohler. The Kohlers have
been making significant annual gifts to the collection
and the Nilsson watercolor was one of many they donated during the year. Connie and Jules Kay, longtime
supporters of PAFA, donated an important 1990
painting by the artist Sarah McEneaney, adding
immensely to the representation of this exemplary
alumna and Philadelphia-based artist.
Among the major purchases made this year was a treasure trove of work by the influential first-wave Chicago
Imagist Seymour Rosofsky. A partial purchase and part
major gift, the collection includes several signature
paintings, extraordinary drawings, and an invaluable study collection of prints dating from the 1940s
through the 1980s. PAFA also acquired several works by
artists closely connected to PAFA’s history and present,
including a group of drawings and paintings by Sidney
Goodman and an ambitious diptych by alumna Njideka
Akunyili.

CONSERVATION
PAFA has regularly employed a conservator or
conservator-restorer on its staff since 1939, making
it one of the first institutions in the United States to
do so. Judy Dion currently fills the role, having joined
PAFA in 2012 as the Paintings Conservator.
Dion believes that the activities of the Conservation
Department should include preservation measures
that impact every work in the collection, as well as
collaborative research with curatorial staff, involvement in institutional planning, and public outreach
that educates visitors and makes conservation a
visible and integral part of PAFA.
Funding from preservation grants has allowed
Dion to install data loggers in all of the Museum
galleries and storage spaces to monitor their
environment, and to adopt a long-term preservation
plan for the collection. In 2012, Dion also completed
treatments of gallery favorite Black Night: Russell’s
Corners (1943) by George Copeland Ault, and
Philadelphia Hannah (c. 1785) by Gilbert Stuart,
which recently went on view for the first time since
its acquisition in 1999.

In 2013, PAFA’s Conservation Department welcomed
two interns and a work-study student to work on
a series of special projects, digitizing all 89 of the
Department’s x-radiographs, which were taken in the
Conservation Lab over several decades. Digitization
of these films offers new methods of examining and
interpreting paintings and sculptures from the
Museum’s collection by comparing the x-rays with
the current nature of the corresponding works.

NEW WORKS ON PAPER GALLERY
The Richard C. von Hess Foundation awarded PAFA a
grant of $250,000 to construct a new gallery for
its extensive collection of works on paper. The project’s
goal is to expand public access to the vast trove of
PAFA’s works on paper collection that includes
drawings, watercolors, sketchbooks, and prints in
traditional and experimental media from all periods
in American art, as well as photographs, including the
largest collection of Thomas Eakins photography.
PAFA’s collection contains a great number of cast
and life drawings by instructors in the 19th century
that provide researchers with a wealth of material
evidence into the development of history and figure
painting in the United States. The collection also
includes masterpieces of drawing by John Singleton
Copley, Mary Cassatt, Grant Wood, and Alfred Leslie,
in addition to over two dozen painting studies by
Arthur Dove, collages by Robert Motherwell, and an
exceptional collection of light-sensitive miniatures. In
recent years, the collection has been enriched by four
major collection donations that expand the Museum’s
works on paper holdings: more than 110 watercolors
by William Trost Richards from Mrs. Samuel M. V.
Hamilton, the Sue Coe Archive, the Vogel Collection
(including works by Richard Tuttle), and the Linda Lee
Alter Collection of Art by Women with works by Alice
Neel, Edna Andrade, and Louise Nevelson.

Benjamin West, Portrait of Prince Octavius, 1783, Gouache over black chalk on buff laid paper,
23 3/8 x 16 5/8 in. , Gift of Mrs. John Wintersteen, 1983.16

Included in this project is an adjacent space where
scholars will be able to view works for research
purposes, and where curators and faculty will be able to
teach from this remarkable collection. PAFA engaged
the architectural firm Atkin Olshin Schade to design
the Works on Paper Gallery and alumna Laura Sallade
to design the table for the Study Room. Construction
began in the spring and was completed in the fall of
2013.

The project’s goal is to expand public access to the vast trove of PAFA’s works on paper collection
that includes drawings, watercolors, sketchbooks, prints, as well as the largest collection of
Thomas Eakins photography.

THE YEAR IN EXHIBITIONS
In fiscal year 2012-13, PAFA hosted thirteen Museum exhibitions celebrating American art of the past 200
years, ranging from an exhibition highlighting Frank Furness’ architectural drawings of the Historic
Landmark Building (Sept. 29 – Dec. 30, 2012), to the highly anticipated debut of the Linda Lee Alter Collection
of Art by Women with The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making Their World (Nov. 17, 2012 – Apr. 7, 2013).

The Female Gaze:
Women Artists Making Their World
(Nov. 17, 2012 – Apr. 7, 2013) Featuring approx-

imately 500 works of art in a variety of media by over
150 artists, the Alter collection came to PAFA as a gift
in December 2010 from Linda Lee Alter. The Female
Gaze presented over 250 works from this superb
collection, arranged thematically throughout the
Samuel M. V. Hamilton galleries, with sections on
self-portraiture; spiritual reactions to nature;
politics; sexuality; family; and a wide range of landand cityscapes. Attendance for The Female Gaze was
the highest in a decade, with 69,444 visitors during the
exhibition’s five-month run.
The landmark exhibition presented a diverse array of
art by women, including more traditional artists such
as Elizabeth Catlett, Yvonne Jacquette, Alice Neel,
Gladys Nilsson, Elizabeth Osborne, and Hollis Sigler,
as well as works by artists who pushed artistic
boundaries, challenged the status quo, or made more
aggressive images of political and social protest, such
as Laylah Ali, Sue Coe, Diane Edison, Christina
Ramberg, and Nancy Spero. Women of color (Americans of Asian, African, Hispanic, and American Indian
ethnicity) are heavily represented in the collection,
furthering PAFA’s vision to “be a defining voice for
education in the evolving traditions and cultural
diversity of the Fine Arts in America.”

112th Annual Student Exhibition (May 10 - June 2, 2013)
The Annual Student Exhibition (ASE),
a time-honored culminating
experience for PAFA students, fills
three gallery floors in PAFA’s Samuel
M.V. Hamilton Building with more
than one thousand art works by graduating BFA students, third- and fourthyear Certificate program students,
and graduating MFA students. The
works exhibited and sold during the
exhibition encompass a wide range of
mediums and styles, showcasing
PAFA’s four core disciplines of
painting, drawing, printmaking, and
sculpture alongside mixed media,
video, installations, and performance
pieces.
The high quality and incredible
diversity in the vision and voice of
PAFA’s artists draws thousands of
eager art-collectors and art-lovers
each May and June. The exhibition
also serves to provide PAFA’s students
with valuable skills as they prepare to
launch their artistic careers, and for
many students, it is their first experience exhibiting and selling their work
in a professional setting.
PAFA’s Women’s Board hosted the
112th Annual Student Exhibition
Preview Party on May 9 with
honorary chairs Hank and June Smith,
co-chaired by Anne E. McCollum and
Carmen Navarro Pelaez. The Preview
Party raised over $150,000, and
opening night sales exceeded $250,000
to support student scholarships.

Close to 500 Preview Party guests
enjoyed access to 1,450 works of art,
including paintings, drawings, prints,
sculpture and installations before the
general public. Over $170,000
in prizes and scholarships were
awarded during the Annual Student
Exhibition – including the coveted
William Emlen Cresson Award, the
Richard C. von Hess Memorial
Scholarship and Travel Award, and the
Women’s Board Travel Scholarships.
Sponsors of the evening included: The

Dive Deep: Eric Fischl and the Process of
Painting (June 29 – Sept. 30, 2012) showcased

145 works of art, including 50 working photographs
and 14 paintings from 1979 to the present. The exhibition was accompanied by a constellation of related
studies in various media, which provided a revealing
look into the painter’s provocative visual intelligence.
Together, these works illustrated Fischl’s process as a
synthesis of astute observation and interpretation. In
conjunction with the exhibition, PAFA co-produced the
35-minute film Eric Fischl: The Process of Painting with
Checkerboard Films. The film chronicles the artist’s
creative process and features interviews between
Fischl and Harry Philbrick, as well as Jodi
Throckmorton.

A New Look: Samuel F. B. Morse’s Gallery of
the Louvre (Aug. 4, 2012 – Sept. 22, 2013)

was created to tell a fascinating tale of art education,
mentorship and practice, and learning from historical
art. PAFA’s installation set Morse’s Gallery of the
Louvre painting into surroundings mirroring what is
shown in Morse’s painting. The exhibition coincided
with the demanding copy class taught at PAFA where
students were encouraged to select works installed in
the Morse room.

Henry Ossawa Tanner:
Modern Spirit travels
nationally after debuting
at PAFA

Between April 11 and May 14, 2013, PAFA, in
collaboration with Amtrak, exhibited contemporary artist KAWS’ 16-foot COMPANION (PASSING
THROUGH) sculpture at Philadelphia’s 30th Street
Station. The highly popular installation served as a
preview for the KAWS @ PAFA exhibition, opening
in October 2013 at the Historic Landmark Building.
An estimated 380,000 people walked through 30th
Street Station while COMPANION was installed, and
over the course of five weeks, 20,000 promotional
rack cards were taken by interested travelers and
passerby. The installation also captured the attention
of hundreds of social media users who shared over
800 photos of COMPANION on Instagram using the
hashtag #PAFAKAWS.

During the fall of 2012, three
Seasonal Admissions Associates
were hired for additional school
visits and National Portfolio Day
events, including:
• 26 National Portfolio Days
• 20 Regional Portfolio Days
• 3 NACAC visual and performing
arts fairs
• 78 high school/community
college/university visits.
The Office of Admissions produced
a school poster, which was sent to
2,400 high schools and community
colleges nationwide. This, together
with ads in national arts publications increased PAFA’s reputation
and teacher awareness of the
programs offered.
An Enrollment Management team
was assembled with staff and
faculty members from various
departments. This team met
regularly over the year to review
marketing and enrollment strategies, and discuss how PAFA is
responding to changes in the
economy and demographic areas
that affect current and future
enrollment trends.
PAFA began to accept electronic
portfolios in mid-November using
SlideRoom ®, and later, in
December, launched an online
application.
PAFA’s Office of Admissions held
an Open House for prospective

students in the fall, as well as a New
Student Day in April 2013. During
the New Student Day, students were
invited to participate in a threehour class with Professor Al Gury,
while parents learned more about
the financial aid application
process, and attended a curator’s
tour of The Female Gaze: Women
Artists Making Their World, lead
by PAFA’s Curator of Modern Art,
Robert Cozzolino. Following fullcampus tours, students, parents,
and guests had the opportunity
to see the apartments and other
amenities available in PAFA at Park
Towne Place.
During the winter break a number
of current PAFA students were
asked to visit their art teachers to
share their thoughts on PAFA and
how the curriculum here has
impacted their artistic practice.
In addition, current student
ambassadors presented their work

received the Alumni Book Award
at the following schools: Strath
Haven High School in Wallingford,

PA, Harriton High School in
Rosemont, PA, Fairfield Warde
High School in Fairfield CT, and
The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr,
PA.
PAFA produced a new viewbook
which serves as the basis for the
Admissions marketing campaign
for the next three academic years.

PAFA also initiated an Alumni
Book Award in the spring. This
project is meant to identify
qualified fine art students ( juniors)
at a number of high schools, who
may be considering applying to an
art school in their senior year. The
Alumni Council helped to identify
appropriate schools. The art teach16

STUDENT SERVICES
This year brought an active calendar of student
programming, from the annual Hayride and all-night
Drawing Marathon, to a Prohibition-themed Winter
Bash and a Cupcake Social. PAFA offered over 30
Career Services presentations and workshops, guiding
students on professional skills, hosting alumni talks
on career paths, and providing skills assessment
testing. The student internship program has expanded
to include opportunities both with PAFA’s museum
staff, as well as off campus sites such as the School
District of Philadelphia, galleries around the city,
and arts organizations ranging from The Print
Center to The Mütter Museum, giving students
valuable hands-on experience with a range of
professionals.
The ongoing partnership with retailer Anthropologie
led to a collaborative fall fashion show during a PAFA
After Dark event to showcase apparel designed with
PAFA student artwork. Students connected with
patrons in the annual Student Print Sale in December,
and the Open Studio Night in February attracted over
800 visitors to get a peek into the inside world of studio
life.
This year marked PAFA’s first annual Parent and
Family Weekend. Families attended classes, enjoyed
meeting PAFA President David Brigham, faculty and
staff, attended an alumni career panel, and explored
Philadelphia. The launch of the PAFA Parent Council,
a leadership group of parents, brought improved
communication with the broader parent body through
the website, and a successful fundraising effort to
furnish the 11th-floor student lounge.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: JACOB MULDOWNEY

“In my mind, ideas of ‘finish’ or ‘resolution’
must remain extremely fluid. No individual
part of an artwork is greater than the whole
and, that being the case, no individual part of
an artwork can be above reproach or immune
to edition or deletion. Both construction and
demolition are, to me, of equal importance,”
- Jacob Muldowney (BFA ‘12).
Jacob Muldowney is one of five
family members to attend PAFA. His
sisters Miriam and Shushana received
their Certificates in 2006 and 2008
respectively, while his brother Ryan
completed his MFA in 2008. His father,
Charles Muldowney (MFA ‘05), teaches
drawing and painting in PAFA’s
Continuing Education program.
Inspired by his spirituality and an
interest in natural processes,
Muldowney incorporates various
media in his works, utilizing oil paint,
graphite, pastel, and charcoal, as well
as printmaking techniques. “The trial-and-error methodologies I employ,
and my quest for endless personal
development and progression, are my
metaphors for life as a process of
becoming,” Muldowney states.
The recipient of numerous
prestigious awards, Muldowney was
one of 20 students nationwide to receive a coveted Graduate Arts Award

from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
in 2013, enabling him to pursue a
Master’s of Fine Art degree at
Washington University in St. Louis.
At PAFA, Muldowney won the Hazel
Art Scholarship Award; The Ricker
Memorial Prize; Carlson Landscape
Residency; Hannah Shickley Memorial
Scholarship, James Bonelli, Jr.
Memorial Prize, and an Honorable
Mention for the Robinson Book Award.
Of this promising PAFA alumnus, Scott
Noel, Professor of Painting and Drawing says: “Jacob has taken on the grand
narratives of perceptual painting and
drawing; distinguishing himself in his
mastery of drawing, color, and
pictorial organization. So comprehensive has been his curiosity that Jacob
has pursued the abstract components
of traditional representation into a
young but promising exploration of
abstract gesture and space.”

PAFA alumna Njideka Akunyili is a
Nigerian artist whose large collage
paintings use the figure as well as
references to her African culture and
heritage.

Oliver Herring’s work includes knit
sculptures, stop-motion videos,
and interactive performances using
volunteers and strangers. He is also
known for his photography and
recent series of photo-sculptures.
Jacob Feige’s paintings explore

abstraction through landscape,
bringing together distinct references from the Hudson River School to
computer graphics and beyond.

Melanie Vote is a multi disciplinary

artist who replicates objects from her
childhood in plaster and then draws
and paints from these objects.

Nami Yamamoto is Japanese artist,

working primarily in installation and
drawing concerning ideas of nature
and the man-made environment.

Jerome Witkin is considered to be

one of today’s premiere narrative
painters, dealing with political
themes such as the Holocaust, torture and the Aids crisis.

Aurora Robson is a multi-media
artist known predominantly for her
transformative work intercepting
the waste stream with plastic debris,
excess packaging and junk mail.
Sue Coe, working mainly in illustration and printmaking, is known for
work that is highly political, thematically dealing issues of capitalism and
cruelty to animals.
Chitra Ganesh’s works are centered
on mythologies and epic narratives
of Hindu, Greek, and Buddhist origin
as well as more contemporary visual
expressions from Bollywood, 1960s
psychedelia, science fiction, feminist
fanzines, and comic books.
Daniel Arsham’s multimedia practice
transcends the lines between
architecture and performance art,
using sculpture to challenge our
perceptions of physical space.
Heiko Blankenstein connects ideas
of flora and fauna with modern technology. Concerned with traditional
modes of drawing and printmaking,
he explores the self-consciousness
of these media and the idea of sound
and song as a metaphor for human
experience.

TEACHING PROGRAMS
PAFA Achieves Middle States Accreditation

New Leadership for the Graduate Programs

PAFA achieved full accreditation from the
Middle States Commission on Higher Education
(MSCHE) for its graduate and undergraduate
degrees and certificates in the fine arts. MSCHE
is the regional accrediting body for many Mid
Atlantic schools, colleges and universities. This
additional level of accreditation was prompted by
the addition of PAFA’s own Bachelor of Fine Arts
(BFA) undergraduate degree program. The BFA
was accredited by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Department of Education in 2008, at
which time the School embarked upon the process
of becoming accredited through Middle States.
The PAFA Bachelor of Fine Arts offers a major in
Fine Arts and four concentrations: Painting, Drawing, Printmaking and Sculpture.

Professor Clint Jukkala is the new Chair of
PAFA’s Graduate Programs. A dedicated
painter and experienced academic leader,
Professor Jukkala previously the Director of
Undergraduate Studies in the Yale School of Art
where he had also served as the Graduate
Programs Coordinator. Professor Jukkala joins
the Graduate Programs at an important time in its
development. He and the Graduate Faculty will be
working together on new programming, scheduling
and marketing initiatives to make a great graduate
program even better. Professors Dan Miller and
Michael Moore have both stepped down as Chairs
in the Graduate Programs Department. Both Miller
and Moore are returning to the faculty, where they
will continue as critics.

PAFA is also accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the
State Department of Education, Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania, to offer the Bachelor of Fine Arts
in Studio Art (BFA), the Master’s of Fine Arts
(MFA), the 120-credit Certificate and the 30-credit
Post-Baccalaureate Certificate. Since 1929, PAFA
has offered a coordinated BFA in conjunction with
the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), which
leads to an Ivy-League degree. PAFA is a member
of the Association of Independent Schools of Art
and Design (AICAD), a consortium of the leading
independent art schools in the United States and
Canada.

Commencement
In the graduation ceremonies of 2013, PAFA
awarded 12 Post-Baccalaureate Certificates and
54 Masters of Fine Arts degrees, as well as 29 new
Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees and 28 Certificates.
Two students were awarded both a Certificate and
a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Commencement
ceremonies were followed by the public opening of
the 112th Annual Student Exhibition (ASE), PAFA
students’ debut into the professional world of
exhibiting artists.

The Commencement ceremonies for the
graduating class of 2013 were especially poignant
this year. Dan Miller, outgoing Chair of the
Graduate Programs, was the Commencement
speaker. Professor Miller is an accomplished
woodblock printmaker, and has a very extensive
list of solo exhibitions and inclusion in public and
private collections. His teaching career at PAFA
began in 1964, and he has been Chair of the Graduate Programs since 1998. Michael Moore, Chair of
the Post-Baccalaureate Program, was awarded the
Dean’s Award for Distinguished Service to PAFA.
Long-time faculty member Elizabeth Osborne
was given the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Commencement speaker to the class of 2011,
Professor Emerita Osborne has long been recognized by critics and her peers as one of the most
accomplished of Philadelphia artists.
The ceremonies also recognized artist and
collector Linda Lee Alter, who was awarded the
honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts for her
support and encouragement of women in the arts.
Alter gave her magnificent collection of over 500
works of art by women artists to PAFA in 2010,
and from November 17, 2012 to April 7, 2013, PAFA
mounted an exhibition of over 200 of these works
in The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making their
World.

FAMILY, STUDENT, ADULT AND TEACHER PROGRAMMING
Public programs for families, students and adults in fiscal year 2012-13 built on
past success, with a wide range of programs that engaged diverse constituencies
in rich and meaningful ways throughout the year.

FAMILY PROGRAMS
Family Arts Academy

Encouraging families to
explore and create art together,
Family Arts Academy offered
29 on-site Sunday workshops,
and 46 outreach workshops
and events in diverse community locations. Participation for
the year, both on-site at PAFA
and out in the community,
exceeded 5,000. Workshop topics included African American
Quilts, Family Totems,
Origami, Chinese Paper Lanterns, Mexican Folk Art, Live
Animal Drawing, and more.
Targeted specifically to students in the School District
of Philadelphia, the Sunday
workshops were offered free
to families with students in
Philadelphia public and charter schools, as well as PAFA
members, and for the price of
Museum admission to other
families.

Family Tours

PAFA expanded its offerings
to families, piloting Stroller
Tours for new parents as well
as Pre-K Tours for active young
families to explore the Museum
together during casual, interactive tours with Museum staff.

FUNdamentals Art Camp

In summer 2012, a total of
519 students (ages 5-15)
participated in 7 week-long
camp sessions, each with its
own theme. These included
Silent Film-Making, Mythical Creatures, Fiber Arts, and
more. PAFA offered after-camp
sessions for working families,
as well as 25 need-based
scholarships.

Spring Art Camp

In March 2013, PAFA
piloted a Spring Break Camp
that allowed children ages 5-15
to attend individual days of the
camp week. Over the course
of the five days, attendance
ranged from 12 to 27, with an
average of 20. Held in the
Samuel M. V. Hamilton
Building, each day camper
engaged in art creation and
exploration related to that day’s
camp theme.

Art-Making beyond PAFA
More than 3,500 family
members participated in 33
art-making workshops and 13
community events, such as the
Philadelphia Science Festival;
Philadelphia International
Festival of the Arts; and
Rittenhouse Row Festival.

22

student PROGRAMS

Student Docent Program

The newest addition to PAFA’s offerings benefiting students was launched this year, following a
highly successful pilot in early 2012 with Mercy
Vocational High School students. PAFA’s Student
Docent Program was initiated by Harry Philbrick
and is based on the program he instituted in 1993
at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum while
he served as Director. This program transforms
Museum engagement into an active inquiry-based
learning experience. Trained student docents lead
their peers through an open process of looking,
discovering, and discussing. The Student Docent
Program continued with Mercy Vocational High
School, and added students from Friends Select
School and Father Judge High School. In its first
full year of operation, 23 students volunteered as
docents, providing tours for 443 of their peers.

Summer Academy for
High School Students

This four-week program offers college-level
art-making experiences to students contemplating
a career in the fine arts or the pursuit of an art

degree in college. Students take rigorous courses
in drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking
from PAFA’s exceptional faculty of instructors,
visit artists’ studios to learn first-hand how artists
develop ideas, create art and build careers, and
take day trips to museums and galleries in Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, D.C. This
year saw the program’s highest enrollment since
its inception in 2005, with 26 students from the
region and across the country

After-School Studio Art Program
for High School Students

Since 1994, this program has provided area high
school students with college-level fine arts
education and hands-on studio experience free of
charge. The 2012-13 school year saw record levels
of participation, with 279 students (an 18% increase over 2011-12), and total class enrollments at
429, a 16% increase (the higher number reflecting
some students taking multiple courses). Students
came from 45 high schools located throughout the
Greater Philadelphia area, including public,
private, charter, and home-schools. 41 students

continued from 2011-12, demonstrating the
program’s ability to have a sustained impact on
students.

School Group Visits

PAFA art educators provided 243 interactive and
curriculum-based gallery tours for K-12 school
groups. Students viewed artworks in the galleries,
linking art to core curriculum subjects such as
language arts and history, and deepening students’
understanding of the importance of art and
creative expression in their daily lives.

Outreach to Students

PAFA expanded its student programming in the
community, as Museum educators travelled to
various locations for K-12 outreach and
Kindergarten Museum outreach. With the
principal focus on reaching students in Philadelphia public and charter schools, these programs
reached 2,600 students in 35 sessions throughout
the year.

23

TEACHER PROGRAMS

Teacher Workshops

PAFA’s Museum educators presented 3 workshops
designed to help classroom teachers link their
curricula to the visual arts, with workshop themes
focused on particular grade levels and/or subjects.
Teachers received 3 hours of Act 48 credit for each
workshop. An Educator Evening at PAFA in January
was attended by 20 teachers. In November, a total
of 55 Philadelphia School District teachers
participated in PAFA-led professional development
workshop at Rush Academy, and an in-Service Day
held at PAFA for teachers from Bensalem High
School.

Summer Academy for Teachers

This one-week course in July 2012 blended the fine
arts, art history, and Museum education techniques
appropriate for all K-12 educators. Led by PAFA’s
Museum Education and Continuing Education staff
the theme: “The Painted Narrative” focused on
PAFA’s Eric Fischl exhibition and invited participants to observe the world through the artist’s eyes.

Supplemental Activities and Lessons

PAFA’s Museum Education staff supports teachers
in preparing students for their school group visit
and tour through making available (at no cost)
pre-visit materials related to the tour theme. In
2012-13, PAFA staff began offering additional
60-minute lessons immediately following the gallery
tour for an additional fee. In its debut year, five
groups participated in this additional activity.

24

ADULT PROGRAMS: CONTINUING EDUCATION

A plethora of art classes, workshops and special programs for
adults of all levels of ability were offered during 2012-13, serving
over 1,300 students. Courses were offered on weekdays, evenings
and during weekends in the fall, spring and summer semesters.

Master Classes

The popular weekend Master Classes drew an attendance of 125 students who learned from such renowned
artists as Bo Bartlett, Susan Van Campen, Christine
Lafuente, Dan Miller, Bruce Samuelson, Stuart Shils,
Ken Kewley, and Juliette Aristides.

Collaboration with Alumni Gallery

The Continuing Education Department began a close
collaboration with PAFA’s Alumni Gallery, offering
Master Classes with select exhibiting artists.

Task Force

During the fall, a group comprising current
Continuing Education students with expertise in
business and marketing was assembled to assist in
increasing enrollment and revenue. As a result, the
course schedule was restructured, making the program
more competitive with similar programs in the area.
Beginning with the spring 2013 semester, the 14-week
course schedule was adjusted to 12- and 10-weeks, and
tuition was reduced. The changes saw increases in
revenue and enrollment in the spring and summer 2013
semesters.

25

ADULT PROGRAMS: PAFA AFTER DARK

In its third season of evening programs, PAFA After Dark
featured five installments that were attended by a total of 1,572
guests. Bringing together performing arts, art-making, and PAFA’s
special exhibitions and permanent collection, PAFA After Dark’s
surprising nights in the galleries offer an eclectic mix of engaging
activities, all in a relaxed social atmosphere.
Designed with Love on October 25, 2012, celebrated
the Frank Furness centenary exhibition.

Made in America on December 13, 2012 offered live
jazz, gallery talks focused on architecture, manufacturing,
and the art factory aspect of the Frank Furness-designed
Historic Landmark Building.
Activate on January 17, 2013, brought together provoc-

ative artists represented in The Female Gaze who spoke
their minds about their art, through performances and in
short videos.

Peep Show on February 21, 2013, was one of the year’s
most popular events. Through gallery talks, demonstrations, and entertainment, PAFA’s Museum staff let
attendees in on some of PAFA’s best-kept secrets.
Word Play on March 21, 2013, celebrated Women’s

History Month, bringing together artists and wordsmiths
to celebrate the rich history of women in the arts, set in
the Female Gaze galleries. Special guided tours by student
docents from Friends Select School led visitors on a quest
to verbalize what they saw in paintings.

Spaced Out on May 2, 2013, probed PAFA’s most unique
and rarely seen space– the historic Cast Hall– which has
been bringing together art and science for over 100 years.

ADULT PROGRAMS: TALKS, LECTURES, DISCUSSIONS

The Review Panel Philadelphia

PAFA inaugurated this yearly series of panel
discussions about contemporary art moderated by
artcritical.com’s David Cohen in the fall of 2012.
Nearly 500 guests attended during the debut year,
which featured distinguished critics from
Philadelphia and beyond joining Mr. Cohen to
critique exhibitions on view in Philadelphia.
Participating critics included Bobbi Booker,
Edward Epstein, Andrea Kirsh, Edith Newhall,
K. Malcolm Richards, Barry Schwabsky, Judith
Stein, Christian Viveros-Faune and Lilly Wei.
Inspired by the popular series of New York-based
public programs founded in 2004 at the National
Academy Museum and moderated by Mr. Cohen,
The Review Panel Philadelphia creates an
informed dialogue about Philadelphia’s art and
artists and connects students and the public with
the arts community of the region. The series aims
to increase the visibility of the city’s art exhibitions and awareness of aesthetic issues, drawing
upon PAFA’s intellectual and artistic leadership in
the Philadelphia arts community and beyond.

Public Forum on Race and Gender
in Contemporary Art

The Female Gaze exhibition generated abundant
press coverage, especially in the wake of comments
made by New York Times critic Ken Johnson in an
exhibition preview. An online petition in response
to Johnson’s writings was signed by over 1,800
people, including artists Glenn Ligon, Kara Walker,

Louise Lawler and Trenton Doyle Hancock, as well
as art historian Miwon Kwon, and artist/critic/
curator Robert Storr. PAFA’s Public Forum on
February 10, 2013 invited a discussion about the
issues at hand. The lively debate focused around
the questions “What role does identity politics
play in the contemporary art world?” and “How do
gender and race play into the art we make, the art
we collect and exhibit?” Panelists included Ken
Johnson; Kimberly Brooks, Artist and Founding
Editor of Huffington Post Arts; Njideka Akunyili,
Artist; and Joyce Kozloff, Artist. University of
Pennsylvania Associate Professor of American Art,
Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, moderated the forum.

Gaze exhibition to give talks focusing on their
careers and artistic inspiration, and to deepen
understanding of their extraordinary works that
are now part of PAFA’s permanent collection.

Graduate Symposium on Women in
American Art

Connecting PAFA’s exhibitions with
communities through free Female Gaze-related
lectures, this series reached 720 individuals at 12
locations throughout Philadelphia, including
community centers, non-profits, and colleges.
Participating groups were also offered a
discounted group rate to attend the exhibition.

The second annual Graduate Symposium at PAFA,
held on February 23, 2013 brought together 6
graduate students from around the region to
present new research papers on the role of women
in the history of American Art. With faculty
respondents from University of Delaware,
University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers, the State
University of New Jersey, Princeton University,
Temple University and PAFA, the day was filled
with new insights into under-researched movements and artists. Total attendance was 54.

Artist Talks

PAFA was delighted to bring artists Sue Coe and
Diane Edison to Philadelphia during The Female

Art at Lunch

A total of 1,276 guests attended 25 free lunch-time
lectures in 2012-13, bringing together artists with
professionals from the art world, and the public
for informal discussions on a variety of topics
related to PAFA’s permanent collection and special
exhibitions.

Traveling Lecture Series

Pen and Paintbrush Club

In its second year, PAFA’s reading group read seven
new books that highlighted themes in the artwork
on view at PAFA. From Zora Neale Hurston’s
classic Their Eyes Were Watching God to Lawrence
Wechsler’s Mr. Wilson’s Cabinet of Wonder,
participants explored the connections between
paintings and literature in light afternoon
discussion.

GRANT HIGHLIGHTS
The Albert M. Greenfield American Art
Resource Online project, supported exclusively
by The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation’s
$500,000 in grant funding over five years, reached
a milestone in 2012-13, when the uploading of
basic information on every object in PAFA’s
collection into the online database was completed.
By the end of December 2013, the uploading of
all images to the online database will also be
complete, enabling Internet users around the
world to access both verbal and image information
about all of the approximately 12,000 objects in
PAFA’s collection.
With grants totaling $350,000, the William Penn
Foundation was the sole major funder of two of
PAFA’s 2012-13 exhibitions: the enormously successful major exhibition, The Female Gaze: Women
Artists Making Their World, and the smaller
exhibition, Building a Masterpiece: Frank Furness’
Factory for Art, celebrating Furness’s architectural
vision for PAFA’s Historic Landmark Building, in
2013, the centenary of his death.

The Richard C. von Hess Foundation
awarded PAFA a grant of $250,000 as the
exclusive funder of the Richard C. von Hess
Foundation Works on Paper Gallery, constructed
in the Historic Landmark Building on the mezzanine level. The new gallery uses space formally
deployed as administrative offices, most recently
housing PAFA’s curators.
In 2012-13, PAFA received substantial significant
support from governmental funding agencies,
including an $85,000 general support grant from
the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the
second year of a two-year grant of $137,000 from
the Institute of Museum and Library Services
supporting PAFA After Dark and Family Arts
Academy at PAFA.

PAFA benefited from the second year of
the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation’s
$150,000-over-two-years grant supporting
PAFA’s vision; the William Randolph Hearst
Foundation’s $75,000 grant supporting PAFA’s
programs benefitting young people; and the first
half of McLean Contributionship’s $50,000 twoyear grant supporting an upgrading and unifying of
PAFA’s internal administrative databases that has
already improved capacity for serving
students, parents, and members. Children Can
Shape the Future provided a $25,000 grant in
support of Family Arts Academy.

The Terra Foundation for American Art made
possible the exhibition A New Look: Samuel F. B.
Morse’s Gallery of the Louvre both through a
loan of Morse’s Gallery of the Louvre that the
Foundation owns, and through a grant of $52,000.
Goldstone Family Foundation supported
the Sculpture Plinth Project’s KAWS@30th
Street Station installation with a $25,000 gift.

31

Bacchanal
On November 10, PAFA hosted its 14th consecutive
Bacchanal Wine Gala and Auction to a sold out
audience of over 320 art and wine lovers. Paddles were
raised often and bidding was competitive, resulting in
the most successful Bacchanal to date; the total
proceeds from the event surpassed all previous
records with over $530,000 raised. Bacchanal was
Co-Chaired by Brian Daggett and Franz Rabauer.
A special paddle raise at the end of the live auction
raised an additional $23,000 to provide art supplies
to PAFA students. Since Bacchanal’s inception, the
event has raised over $4.5 million to help fund PAFA’s
student scholarships and education programs.
The 2012 Wine Auction celebrated Great Wine Families of the World and honored Carissa and Chiara
Mondavi of Continuum Estate, Napa Valley, California; Pio Boffa of Pio Cesare Winery, Piedmont, Italy;
Jean Trimbach of Maison Trimbach, Alsace, France
and Robert Pepi of Bodega Valentin Bianchi, Mendoza,
Argentina. Special Guest Chefs for the Gala Dinner
were Patrick Feury of Nectar in Berwyn, PA and
Terence Feury of Tavro 13 in Swedesboro, NJ.

Membership
This year, 3,068 general members were served and
PAFA welcomed 533 new members. Members-only
programming offerings were increased to include
curator and faculty led gallery tours, providing
members with the opportunity to understand the
collection through both an art historical and an artists’
perspective. A Library Membership program was also
created in FY13 to better serve PAFA’s local communities, providing local libraries with the opportunity to
extend free general admission to the Museum to their
patrons. This new initiative served 13 local libraries
in its inaugural year. PAFA Members also enjoyed free
admission to the popular PAFA After Dark season.
32

The Peale Circle
The Peale Circle, PAFA’s leadership membership group had a
wonderful year with many varied opportunities to explore art,
including private tours of the Museum and its exhibitions, visiting
private collections on the Main Line and Long Island, tours through
Art Basel Miami and The Armory Show in New York. The highlight
was the annual three-day Art Exploration Trip to San Francisco.

Newport RI

PAFA’s Peale Circle participated in celebrating the
100th Anniversary, of the Newport Art Museum
and the exhibition of works by William Trost
Richards. PAFA loaned an extraordinary
collection of the artist’s “coupon” paintings to
the exhibition.

Dr. Silvers Private Collection

The Peale Circle visited the residence of Dr.
Willys Silvers for a private tour of Pennsylvania
old masters. Dr. Silvers has been collecting for
over twenty-five years.

The Schulhof Collection

The Peale Circle traveled to Rudolph and
Hannelore Schulhof ’s collection in East Hampton
New York. Their collection includes pieces by
artists including Ellsworth Kelly, Cy Twombly,
Jasper Johns, and Mark Rothko.
