Fine Arts have the honor to present their 134th Annual Report .
This report is accompanied by an addenda containing specific statistics,lists of Jurymen, Prize Awards , acquisitions and purchases
as supplementary data.
The Treasurer's Report in detail is respectfully submitted herewith.

EXIHBITIONS
2)

The 134th Annual l!.xhibi tion of Painting an d Sculpture was held in the
Galle ries January 29th through March 5th, 1939, v'1 i th a Pri vate View
on Saturday evening, January 28th. Co-incident with this Exhi bi tion
was a special Exhibition of mural designs executed un de r the United
States Treasury Department, Section of Fine Arts •
.A Special Memorial Exhibition of the work of the late Sergeant Kendall
was held in Gallery F from March 14th 1;0 May 11th.

A special Exhibition of sculptures by Anna Hyatt Huntington was held
in ,the Rotunda and Galleries J and E from April 5th to April 26th.
Through the duration of these two special Exhibitions the , remaining
Galleries were hung wi th selected works from the Academy's Permanent
Collect ion6

The Student Exhibition held in conjunction with the competition fo r
the Cresson 'E'tltnd>lnea:n,),I'raveling Scholarships was on view in Galleries
the East and West Central Galleries

February 5, 1940

Oo-incident with the Student Exhibition was a Showing of Freehand Drawings
from the high schools of ~hiladelphia and vicinity in competition for the
advertised Academy awards.
.
All of the Galleries were , hung with selections from the Permanent Collection from June 9th until Octpber 7th.
An Exhibit ion of selected work from the exhibits of the competing students
for European Traveling Scholarships was hung in the front two studios of
the .SchoQl on the first f loor of the Academy from June 30th to Labor Day.
The 37th Annual Water Color and Print Exhi bi tion and the 38th Annual
Exhibition of Miniat ures were hung in all of the Gal:!.eries with the exception of the West Central Gallery and Galleries G,H,I,K, and N from
October 22 nd through November 26th with a Private ' View on October 21st ..

Oo-incident with this Exhibition the . exhibit of selected works of the
students from. the Summer School at Ohester Springs was on view in Gallery
G and the West Central Gallery. Selections from the Permanent Collection
were again hung in the Galleries from the ti me of the closing of these
previous Exhibitions to complete the year. Galleries C and D,however,
were hung with print s from the Le\'\'1s and Phillips Oollections covering
the work of Albrecht Durer and the German HLittle IIJ1:asters.tI

The winter School session not being co-incident in dates with this Annual
Report, a general statement is made reporting successfully active departments both Winter and Summer with few chang es in curriculum, but

improved management and physical conditions.
BUILDING

.A consistant program over the entire year was carried forward relative
to general cleaning and painting in all s :e ctions of the main building
at Broad and Cherry Streets and also the Annex at 1834 Arch Street ,
Galleries J and the East Central Gallery were completely redecorated.
The student's plaster casting room was reconstructed and enlarged and
new indirect lighting was installed in the life sculpture studio.
All of this work plus a very considerable amount of re pai ring and paint ing on the Chester Sprfng~ property was accomplished wi th the use of
our own crew of mene

A special note is included in this record that for the entire year 1939
an employee was j.ncluded in the payr\Oful into whose hands the responsibility for all publicity was placed. The results of this office were grat ifying,

Beginning May lOth$1939 J at first gratfu1tollsly and later on a small
salary a regular Librartan has been in attendance in the Academy's Library
under whos e direct ion the ent ire Library has been r e-catalogued so that
it is now a vital adjunct of the School. The work of ~ '; creat j.ng an
artists' file has been begun particularly stressing Alner~; can a r~ ists,
which has splendid potentialities as a record, vital to th e entlre country.

The thanks of the Management of the Academy are ext ended to the Mayor
of Philadelphia, the Virectors and Council for their cooperation and
the President and Members of the Board of Education for the sending of
promising students to our Schools, and to the n ewspapers for their intelligent criticisms and general inclusion of items of news relative to
the Academy. Acknowledgment is also made to a ll the employees of the
Academy for the faithful performance of their duties.
