EXHIBI'I'IONS

The 136th Annual Exhibiti on of Painting and Sculpture was held in
the Galleries January 26th through March 2nd, 1941, with a Private
View on Saturday evening, January 25th at nine o'clock.
The Fellowsh ip Annual Exhi-bi tion of WaterColoJ1!,-? and Prints was held
in Galleries B,C, and D from March 13th through March 30th,19L,,1, opening
with a Tea on March 13th from 4 to 60 t clock •
The Fellowship Annual Exhibition of Oil Paint i ngs and Sculpture was
held in Galleries B, C, and D from April 3rd through April 20th,1941
opening with a tea on April 3rd from 4 to 6 o'clock.
During both of these Exhibitions, the Permanent Collection was on
vi ew in the remaining Galleri es • .
The Student Exhibition held in conjunction with the competition for
the Cr esson ~1l1aveling Scholarships was on view in Galleries C,D,E,F,G,
the Rotunda and West Central Galleries from May 22nd through Jun e 16th,
1941. Co-incid ent with the Student Exh i bition was a ShulNing of Freehand Drawings from the High Schools of Philadelphia and vicinity in
competition for the advert is ed Academy awards.
During the summer months all of the Galleries vvere hung with selections
from the Permanent Collection and were dismantled on October 20,1941
to prepare for the hanging of the 39th Annual Water Color and Print Ex-

The 39th Annual Water Color and Print Exhibition and the 40th Annual
Exhibition of Mini atures were hung in all of the Galleries with the
exception of the Galleries G, H, I, K and the West Central Gallery,
from November 2nd through December 7th,1941, vvith a Private View
on the evening of November 1st at nine o'clock.
Concurrent with these Exhibitions was held an exhibition of the work
of students in the Chester Springs Suramer School in Gall ery G and
the West Central Gallery, and in Gallery K, an Exhibition of Murals ~
sponsored by the Federal Government in competititon for the Carville,
Louisiana , Marine Hospital. Galleries H and I were hung with examples
from the Academy's Permanent Collectione

SCHOOLS

The Winter School session not being co~incident in dates with this
Annual Report, a general statement is made reporting successfully
active departments both Winter and Summer with continued management
and good physical conditionse

BUILDING
Main Building:" Bro.§:d &_Q.herry Streets.
As in past years, the chief period of ln~ensive cleaning and renova~lons
is in the surrnner months e 11 hi8 summer in addition to the regular painting
of i'loors on the First Floor and walls of the studios and }:lri vate Office,
the Lecture Room wa s completely renovated. i11he floors ·were refinished,
walls stripped and lined with masonite to a height of 8'0", walls and
ceilings painted; series of murals' cleaned, restretched and framed with
light mold and new stage curt ain s. The student art supply store wa s
moved from the Cura tor's Office to n ewly constructed and much more
a dequate quarters in the rear of the School ..
The addition of an outside wtnd6w and other general renovations al lowed
the dressing room connect ed with the large painting studio to be used
as a new g.irls' rest room ..
Readjustment of storage s:pace in the basement provides a vault for
sculpture sufficient in size to house all of our present Coll e ction and
ample room for expansion.

Beginni n~ with Uctober

1,1941, the Curator of Prints, Miss Bertha von Mos 6hzisker, was pl aced on a monthly salary basis. Previous to this date,
Miss ~ on Moschzisker had offered her services grat is.
Beginning with August 1,1941, the Membership Campa i gn wa s continued
under the direction of an employee j.l1cluded in the payroll, and statistics
for this campa i gn are reported in the Supplement to this Hep or t.
Thr:ough the generosity of Mr. William Clarke lVl ason the Academy offered two
c a sh prizes of $100. each in conneution with the Philadelphi~Flower Show,
March 24-29,1941.

LIBRARY -

The Libra rian reports the purcha se of seventeen volumes a t a cost
of $54.48 and the receipt of thirty-five a dditi on a l volumes thr ou gh
gifts.
A clipp ing file on arti~ts ha s increased t o a representation of over
2500 artists. A separate clipping file of contempo r ary illustra tors
ha s been organ ized. 1550 photo g r a~p hs of anim als an d miscell aneous
sub-j ects hav e been collected for a reference file, supplemented by
newspaper and ma gazine clipping s.

'rhe p rint collection purcha sed thirteen p rints and vilaS g iven sixtyseven prints and four books illustrat ed with litho gr a phs or woodcuts.
