The 1.39th Annual Exhibition of Paintings and Sculpture was held in the
galleries from January 2.3, 1944 through February 27, 1944, with· a
Private View on Saturday afternoon, January 22nd from .3 to 5:.30 PeM.
The Fellowship Annual Exhibition of Water Colors and Prints was held
in Galleries C and D from March 5th to March 2L", 1944, opening with a
Tea on March 4th from .3 to 5 P.M.
A juried show of student work, sponsored by the Fellowship , was also
held from Ma rch 5 , - 2 4th .
The Fellowship Annual Exhibiti on of Oil Painting and Sculpture was
held in Galleries C and D from March 26 to April 9, opening with a
Tea on Mar ch 25, from .3 to 5 P.M.
During both of thes e Exhibitions the Permanent Collection was on view .
In the remaining Galleries.
An Exhibition of work from the Graduate School of Education, University
of Pennsylvania, was held M.arch 18th to April 9th in gallerie s L, M, an d
N.

An Exhibition of Hogarth Prints from the PeTIlanent Collection was hung
in Gallery A from April 1 to . October 15.
An EXhibition of sixteen pictures on wartime transportation by Thornton
Oakley was held in Gallery D from April 16 to April .30, opening. with a
Private View on Saturday afternoon , April 15th, from .3 to 5 P.M.
An Exhibition of Albrecht purer Prints from the Permanent Col l ection,
hung in Gallery lVI, was held April 18 to October 15.

REPORT, 1945

A traveling exhibition of Four American Wa t ercolorists, Homer, Sargent,
Dehn, and Burchfield, arranged thro ugh the Department of Circulating
Exhibitions, the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, was hung in
Gallery F from April 22 to May 1 4.
The Student Exhibition held in c onjunction with the .Competition for the
William Emlen Cresson Travel i ng Schola rships was on view in Gallery F
;from May 25th through June 11, 1944, opening wi th exercises for the
students and their friends on the afte rnoon of May 24, a t 4 P.M.

During the summer months a ll of the Galleries were hun g with selections
from the Permanent Collecti on an d wer e dismantled on October 15th to
prepare for the h an gi ng of the 42nd Annual Water Color and Print
Exhi bition and the 43rd _Annua l Exhibition of Mini at ures.
The 42nd Annua l Water Color and Print Exhibi t ion and the 43rd Annual
Exhibi tion of Miniatur e s ,fiere hung in a ll o f the Galleri e s with the
exc ep tion of Galleries G, H, i, and K, and War Sk etches of the Pacific
Area by Cap tain Georg e M. Ha rding , U.S. M. C.R. we re included in the
exhibition through the courtesy of the United St a tes Marine Corps in
Ga llery D from October 29th through Dec ember 3, 1944, opening with a
Private View on ,S aturday a fternoon, October 28th, from 3 to 5:30 P. M.

An Exhibition tit l ed "Star Presenta tion" consisting of the Ac a demy's
fort y -eight most i mportant American pos sessions, stored as a war
prec aution, returned to Galleries E and F; l. a ll other galleries hung
wi th pictures from the Perm.anent Collection, from December 13 " 1 944
through January 7, 1945, with a Priva te View on Tuesday ev ening ,
December 12th at 8:30 P.M.

The Chester Springs Summer Sch091 was not opened in the season of 1944,
due to War conditions, but a 6-:JJeek Summer School was held at Broad
and Cherry Streets from June 19th to July 29th, 19~-4.

No major ren ov-ations were necessary at Broad and Cherry Streets and
only general maintenance an d normal repairs were a ccompl ished~
The exterior of 1834 Arch Street was painted by Henry S. Rau Company
in the fall of 1944 and th e interior wal? painte.d by th e men from the
basement crew.
Chester_S prings, Pennsylvania
No ma jor renovations were necessary at Chester Springs an d only
general maintenance and normal repairs were a ccompl is h ed.
GENERAL
A special note is included that the publicity has been retained in
the hands of the Campb,e ll-Wirtz Associates of 329 Walnut Street, '
Philadelphia, whi ch firm has been hand l ing it since J anuary 2-8, 1942.

LLBR ARY

The wo rk of the Library is handic aped without a li br ari an. Th ere
has been no one in this pos ition throughout this current year. Miss
Marth a Schick has h'e r desk in the library and has endeavored, in
conjunction wi t h her work for membership, to record lending and a
general check on a ll books.
The clipping file on artists has been continued in a small way through
the year, 1944, as has also the refer en ce file of photographs of
animals an d misc ellaneous subj~cts, supplernented by newspaper and
maga z ine clippings.

COL L E C T ION

There has been no Curator of Prints throughout this current year and
this department has been almost i nact ive. However,excellent groups
have been on view in the galleries at times. through the year when our
Permanent Collection was shown.
The tha;nks of the Management of the Academy are extended to the
President and memb ers of the Board of Edu cat ion for sending promis ing
students to our Schools, and to the newsp a pers for their int ellig ent
criticisms and general inclusion of items of news relative to the
Academy.
